Causeyside Street redevelopment consultation closing next week

Those wanting to give their views on the proposed redevelopment of Causeyside Street will have to be quick as the consultation period will close soon.

The plans, which were revealed earlier this month would see a two-way cycle lane installed from Paisley Canal Station up to High Street and the road would be narrowed from two lanes to one.

Renfrewshire Council say that there would potentially be 51 new parking spaces and that work would be done to shorten crossing lengths for pedestrians to make it safer for them to navigate the street.

The council's consultation is due to close on August 7. They are encouraging Paisley residents, nearby businesses and regular users of Causeyside Street to share their opinions on the plans.

Causeyside Street Regen plans (Renfrewshire Council)

There had been some negative reaction to the plans, with Causeyside Street business owner Kenneth Fallon of Kenneth Edwards salon saying that he would move his business from the area if the plans went ahead.

However, not everyone is against the plans, James Peacock of WM Phelps believes they will improve the look and feel of the street.

Following a visit from council officials seeking to engage with local business owners James said: “I'm all for investment coming into Causeyside Street as it's important that regeneration takes place to improve the look and feel of the town.

"The addition of parking spaces as well as new cycle lanes will bring more people into the town and, as long as it is policed properly, it should make a positive difference.

"I know the Council and Scottish Government are encouraging people to use sustainable transport more often and this will definitely help people to do that on Causeyside Street."

Cllr Michelle Campbell (Renfrewshire Council)

Councillor Michelle Campbell, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “These proposals would modernise Causeyside Street by providing sustainable transport links that walkers and cyclists will want to use and feel safe while doing so, as well as improving public transport connections too.

“We recognise it would be a substantial change to the current infrastructure on Causeyside Street, but the plans could actually increase the parking available by more than 50 spaces in addition to the active travel improvements.

“We want the proposals to make a positive difference to Causeyside Street and support the community and our businesses, so please take the time to look through the plans and give us your feedback so we can incorporate this into the next stage of the project.”
