Cause of fire which ripped through Ilkeston pet shop
A fire which ripped through a pet shop in Ilkeston has been deemed accidental after an investigation was carried out.
The blaze broke out at the 1st 4 Pets shop in Bath Street, Ilkeston, just before 5pm on Saturday, October 9.
Incident commander Steve Ratcliffe told Nottinghamshire Live there "were no pets inside during the fire" and that the business owner and his family had tried to put the blaze out.
On Monday, October 11, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue confirmed the findings of their investigation - that the fire was likely caused by a naked flame coming into contact with combustible materials.
A spokesperson for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said: "The fire investigation into this incident has concluded the most likely cause to be accidental due to a naked flame coming into contact with combustible materials."
A statement from the pet shop on Facebook read: "Everyone is safe, luckily no animals were in the shop.
"Thank you for all offers of help we will try to get back to everyone but for now everyone is safe and that's what is important."
Derbyshire fire chief Steve Ratcliffe said previously: "The business owner and his family were in the building at the time of the fire, they attempted to tackle the fire without success.
"They got themselves out OK."
A spokesperson for Derbyshire Constabulary said: "We were called by Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service to reports of a fire at a pet shop on Bath Street at Ilkeston just before 5pm on Saturday 9 October.
"Two people were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.
"Significant damage was caused to the pet shop and to adjoining premises.
"There is no criminal investigation ongoing."
People nearby in Bath Street were left stunned when the fire broke out on Saturday, with flames bursting out of one window and multiple fire crews dispatched to deal with the blaze.
Retired Trev Jolly, 66, said: “[I've] not seen much like this happen here before.
“I’ve only just seen it - I was just coming here to get cash out at the bank.
“You can see the smoke rising though, I’ve never seen this many fire trucks.”
