Cause of city centre power cut which plunged hundreds of homes into darkness

The cause of a power cut which plunged homes and businesses into darkness yesterday evening (September 9) has been revealed.

Hundreds of properties were affected by the outage, which hit Bristol city centre shortly after 7pm.

A customer at Zaza Bazaar on Canon's Road sent Bristol Live mobile phone footage of the restaurant in darkness following the power cut.

The Watershed was also reportedly forced to cancel planned screenings because of the outage.

After the power cut was first reported at around 7.15pm, engineers worked to fix the issues and had power restored by around 8.20pm.

Western Power has said a fault with an underground cable is the likely cause behind the power cut.

"Around 300 properties were affected," a spokeswoman for the electricity distributor said.

"Everything was resolved within 45 minutes apart from 18 properties.

"The remaining 18 were sorted by 8.20pm.

"At this stage, it is believed the cause was an underground cable fault but an investigation is still ongoing."
