Catwalk trends so far

Red: Pushing red for autumn is a safe move in the fashion chess game. Victoria Beckham called her reds (pictured) vermillion, magenta and merlot. Marc Jacobs dressed models in burgundy guipure lace and lipstick red rubber; Diane von Furstenberg chose pillar-box red for her pioneer-meets-party-spirit collection. Photograph: Retna

Big earrings: Stars are the new bananas in terms of lobe-chic. Last season Prada did banana earrings and this season Dolce (pictured) did giant musical notes and giant stars, while Moschino did chunky gold hoops. Earring swot Gwyneth has got in there early – wearing an oversized pair of multicoloured sparklers at the Oscars. Photograph: FILIPPO MONTEFORTE/AFP/Getty Images

Bag holding: Do not underestimate the power of bag semaphore. Bag holding speaks volumes about the direction fashion is headed in. Remember when it was all about proudly toting a bag in the crook of your elbow? Well, that looks all wrong now – too Wag-meets-It-bag era. Now Mrs Prada wants us to carry our bags shield-like and defensively (pictured). Analyse that. Photograph: MATTEO BAZZI/EPA

Checks: Checks are the new stripes. Miuccia Prada’s included two-tone windowpane checks and washed-out Mondrian squares. At MaxMara (pictured), cosy coats came in homely, knitted blanket-check. Both collections seemed to allude to kilts – could this be next season’s surprise trend? Photograph: Catwalking.com/Catwalking.com

Long boots: The era of the ankle boot is nearing a close. Come autumn it will be long boots or nothing. Designers in every city pushed them – possibly because they work with the New Hemline. Shout out to Mulberry for its Tillie boot (pictured) which garnered equal love to the label’s bags this season. Photograph: Catwalking.com/Catwalking.com

Longer skirts: After an extended period of leg-fixation, fashion has moved on from high hemlines. On the catwalk, most designers are agreeing that an inch or two below the knee is autumn’s headline hemline. According to Clements Ribeiro (pictured), customers are already keen on this trend. Spots: Spots count as bonafide “fashion” again. Marc Jacobs’ show (right) featured rubber circles made to look like sequins, spotted tights and dotted bags. In London, Louise Gray picked up the spotted baton with muliticoloured dots, while Topshop featured dalmatian spots.
