
Live cattle futures are falling $1.60 to $2.20 at the midday portion of the midday session. Cash trade has yet to get kicked off this week, with last week at $239-240 in the South, with Northern sales of $237-238. The Wednesday morning Fed Cattle Exchange online auction showed no sales on the 2,144 head offered, with bids at $235. Feeder cattle futures are up 50 cents in the September contract, with other contracts down $2 to $2.50. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was back down $2.32 at $361.10 on September 22.
USDA Wholesale Boxed Beef prices were lower in the Wednesday morning report, with the Chc/Sel spread widening to $21.46. Choice boxes were down $1.63 at $379.17, while Select was $2.19 lower to $357.71. USDA federally inspected cattle slaughter for Tuesday was estimated at 121,000 head, with the week to date total at 231,000 head. That was even with last week and 14,607 head below the same week in 2024.
