Catherine Shaw: Body found in search for missing backpacker

Body found: Backpacker Catherine Shaw was reported missing on March 5

A body has been found in the search for missing British backpacker Catherine Shaw.

Catherine, 23, from Witney, Oxfordshire was last seen by security cameras in the early hours of Tuesday March 5, leaving the Eco-Hotel Mayachik near Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.

The Lucie Blackman Trust posted a statement this evening: "We are saddened to announce that a body has been found in the search for Catherine Shaw. Formal ID has not taken place but it is believed to be Catherine. Catherine's family have been informed. "

The body was found shortly after a jacket believed to be Ms Shaw's was found.

Earlier, rescuers had said the chances of finding her alive were slim.

Amy Farrow, leader of a search party of 30 volunteers, said: "I'm always hopeful until I see something to prove otherwise.

"But six days in this climate without water, it's unlikely that we're going to find her alive.”

The Lucie Blackman Trust assists British families whose relatives are in crisis abroad.

In a video released by the trust during the search, Catherine's mother urged her to get in touch as they need to know she is happy and well, while her father described his daughter as of "slim build, and about 5ft 7in tall".

He added: "Your friends, your family are all really worried about you, please come home sweetheart."

Ms Shaw set out travelling in September last year.

She had been travelling in Guatemala for two weeks having previously visited Mexico and California.

Drones were deployed in the search for her with Guatemalan police, locals and Brits also taking part.

A puppy which Ms Shaw took with her when she left her accommodation was found on a hiking trial on Friday.

A Facebook appeal page said: "The puppy was shivering and crying according to the man who found it."
