Catherine O’Hara, Star Of Schitt’s Creek & Home Alone, Dies Aged 71

Comedy legend Catherine O’Hara, best known for her roles in Schitt’s Creek and Home Alone, has passed away at age 71.

TMZ was first to report the news about the legendary Hollywood actress’ death on Friday, with her agency later confirming that she passed away at her home in Los Angeles “following a brief illness”. The cause of death is unclear.

O’Hara began her comedy career in 1974 as a cast member of Toronto improv group The Second City and made her feature debut in the 1980 film Double Negative alongside Eugene Levy and John Candy. She went on to star in Beetlejuice, Home Alone and its sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and four of Christopher Guest’s mockumentary films — most notably Best in Show and For Your Consideration.

She also starred as the iconic Moira Rose in the sitcom Schitt’s Creek from 2015 to 2020, earning awards at the Emmys, Golden Globes, and Actor Awards.

Most recently, she had a guest role in the second season of The Last of Us alongside Pedro Pascal and had a main role in Seth Rogen’s comedy series The Studio. She earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the Apple TV series, but didn’t attend the ceremony earlier this month. Production on The Studio’s second season kicked off just last week.

Macaulay Culkin leads celebrity tributes

Tributes have flooded in following O’Hara’s shock passing, with Home Alone’s Macaulay Culkin sharing a sweet Instagram post dedicated to his on-screen mum.

“Mama. I thought we had time,” he wrote alongside a side-by-side photo from Home Alone and when he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023.

“I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar commented, “This is heartbreaking”, while Candace Cameron Bure said O’Hara “will always be a legend in our family”.

“Oh buddy.. that embrace… both of them… all that time,” Walton Goggins wrote.

Pedro Pascal also shared a photo with O’Hara from the set of The Last of Us on Instagram alongside a sweet caption.

“Oh, genius to be near you. Eternally grateful. There is less light in my world, this lucky world that had you, will keep you, always. Always,” he wrote. “The one and ONLY #CatherineOHara.”

Meanwhile, her Beetlejuice Beetlejuice co-star Justin Theroux honoured her memory by sharing a photo of her empty director’s chair on set.

“Oh Catherine. You will be so so missed,” he captioned the snap.

O’Hara is survived by her husband, production designer Bo Welch — who she met on the set of Beetlejuice — and their two sons, Matthew and Luke.
