The cafe at one of Liverpool's renowned cathedrals has closed suddenly after council health inspectors found evidence of a mouse infestation inside.
A customer complaint, about mouse droppings in food being served, led to inspectors staging a sudden visit to the Piazza Cafe Bar at the Metropolitan Cathedral yesterday.
When the environmental health team arrived at the cafe - based at the steps of Paddy's Wigwam in Mount Pleasant - they found a large amount of rodent droppings indicating an infestation.
A council spokesman said: "We received a customer complaint about the Piazza Cafe yesterday.
"We inspected the venue and based on what they found, the business agreed to voluntarily close.
"The cafe will be re-inspected next week."
The ECHO was alerted to the issues at the cafe by a member of the public who described droppings being found in a basket of bread.

This was then reported to the council who swiftly carried out an inspection at the venue.
A notice in the window of the café states that it has temporarily closed due to 'unforeseen circumstances.'
The Piazza Cafe is at the bottom of the main Metropolitan Cathedral steps – at the junction of Mount Pleasant and Hope Street.
There is seating for 120 for those visiting the cafe, inside and outside on the cathedral Piazza.
The ECHO has attempted to contact the Piazza Cafe about the situation.
The Metropolitan is one of Liverpool's two famous cathedrals.
The other, the Anglican cathedral is based on St James Mount.
