Cath Kidston says 'farewell Newcastle' as it confirms Grainger Street shop will shut

Fashion firm Cath Kidston is leaving Newcastle.

The company's Grainger Street store will close on Sunday March 15.

It is a fresh blow to the street's shopping scene, following a string of other closures.

Management at the shop were unable to comment on the closure. However, a sign outside reads: "Farewell Newcastle, it is time for us to go".

It has not yet been revealed if the closure will result in job losses, or if staff will be moved to Cath Kidston's Metrocentre branch, which remains open.

Recently both Starbucks and Patisserie Valerie's Grainger Street shops closed.

And before Christmas, independent food retailer MMM and Glug partially blamed "crippling" business rares as it suddenly shut.

"It was costing us around £100,000 a year simply to open our doors," claimed owners Simone and Ian Clarkin, in a statement posted on Twitter.

Cath Kidston, which opened the Newcastle branch in November 2012, has yet to make public why the shop is closing.

ChronicleLive contacted the company for comment.

However earlier this year it closed its Essex branch while last August, the Harrogate store shut.

In a statement at the time, a spokesperson said: "Cath Kidston rapidly expanded 10 years ago and many of the leases for these stores are coming up for renewal.

"This provides an opportunity to relocate stores or add new branches in order to best serve our customers."
