Caterpillar's Peterlee factory continues production despite coronavirus

Production at a construction equipment manufacturer is continuing at a County Durham plant despite the coronavirus outbreak, it has been confirmed.

They also said that the health of workers was their "top priority".

The Covid-19 infection has forced many businesses to close temporarily after the Prime Minister ordered all non-essential businesses to close in a bid to stem the virus.

Automotive giant Nissan last week suspended production at its Sunderland plant because of disruption to its supply chains and a drop in market demand caused by the outbreak.

However, Caterpillar has said they are continuing to operate.

Concerns have been raised by Caterpillar staff to about the situation

But the company have said that their employee's health and well-being remains their "top priority" and ensured they were sticking to "government guidance".

A spokesman for Caterpillar said: "Caterpillar continues to operate its Peterlee facility while adhering to the Government’s Guidance.

"Our employees’ safety, health and well-being remain a top priority."

The virus has had a devastating impact on businesses across the country with many companies being forced to close permanently.

Mexican restaurant chain Chiquitos and fashion and furniture chain Laura Ashley are just some businesses that recently went into administration.
