Could giant 6ft condoms save the performing arts in the wake of the pandemic?
Actress Cate Blanchett has suggested pulling on rubber safety suits before entering theatres to ensure we practise safe sets.
The star, who appears on the BBC’s Mrs America this weekend, lamented the impact social distancing rules are having on the entertainment sector, and came up with some interesting solutions.
“In the short-term it may mean plexi-glass between the seats,” she suggests.
“Human condoms?” she asks with a laugh.
“I’ve bought shares in condom manufacturing.” It could be quite the theatre-goers’ strap-line: No glove? No Love’s Labours Lost.
It comes as stars from the stage, the music industry and the arts world call for help keeping venues in business.
“What are people going to do with their spare cash?” asks Cate. “They want to listen to music, they want to go to the theatre, they want to see a film.
“They don’t just go to the theatre district, they go to the restaurants, they get cabs, so there’s a huge multiplying effect.
“We’re all going to want to go out, whether it’s a music festival or theatre. That’s the stuff we’re all going to miss.”
