It appears to be a boom time for films about journalism with the star-studded newspaper drama Spotlight heading for possible awards glory and now a broadcast tale also tipped for Oscar success.
The fact-based drama Truth stars Cate Blanchett as Mary Mapes, producer to Robert Redford’s Dan Rather, who was involved in a controversial story surrounding the legitimacy of a story about George Bush and whether her avoided serving in Vietnam through preferential treatment.
The film premiered at this year’s Toronto film festival, with mixed notices. The Guardian’s Catherine Shoard called it “high-class cheese” while Variety’s Justin Chang found it “complex, incisive and high-minded”.
Despite a varied response, it’s still being touted as an awards contender with Blanchett set to take on herself with her role in Carol also competing for a best actress slot. The film also stars Elisabeth Moss and Dennis Quaid.
Truth hits US cinemas on 16 October with a UK release yet to be confirmed.
