TV: BoJack Horseman
For all its raucous charms, the first season of Netflix’s animated comedy about a Hollywood horse actor never quite lived up to the reputation of its all-star cast: Will Arnett, Alison Brie and Aaron Paul. We’re hoping that some fine-tuning between seasons and the introduction of a new bunch of guest stars, including Lisa Kudrow, will turn BoJack Horseman from a candidate for the glue factory to the “mane” man. Available from Friday.

Music television is in a pretty dire way these days, so credit to Channel 4 for providing some light in the darkness. Hot on the heels of the channel’s recent collaboration with i-D magazine, Street Sound And Style, is the second series of the music magazine programme, which features interviews and live performances with up-and-comers. This time round that includes Novelist, Homeboy Sandman and Action Bronson. The show airs in the Wednesday late-night block, and is available on All4 shortly after.

This US podcast sees commentators Alesia, Fatima, Aurelia and Ramou dissect pop-cultural goings-on, with a focus on how people of colour are represented in the media. That remit allows for a pleasingly wide range of topics – a recent episode featured both a discussion on Rachel Dolezal, the civil rights activist accused of falsifying her racial background, and the sadism of the Game Of Thrones writers – while the lively back-and-forth between the quartet prevents the series from ever seeming overly studious.

Mike Skinner is the unlikely host for this six-part series on the rap scene in Israel and Palestine, a place where music and politics are inseparable. Skinner speaks to musicians on both side of the political divide, from outspoken Palestinian rapper Tamer Nafar to ultra-orthodox Israeli Ohad Cohen. Most fascinating of all is Ben Blackwell, member of a remote Hebrew Israeli desert tribe, whose world feels entirely detached from the drama of the West Bank. Skinner proves an adept interviewer: relatable, funny and, on occasion, very incisive. Catch an episode a week over on Noisey.

A new batch of online-only comedy pilots arrives on the iPlayer this week. Highlights include People Time, in which Sheeps, Claudia O’Doherty, Jamie and Natasia Demetriou and Ellie White breathe new life into the sketch-show format; and SunnyD, a vehicle for stand-up Dane Baptiste, about his attempts to break free from a life of mundane compromise.
