Catalytic converter thefts reported on the South Side

The catalytic converter thefts happened between June 2 and July 9, 2019 in the early morning hours, police said.

Chicago police are warning residents about a series of catalytic converter thefts reported in June and July on the South Side.

The area most targeted by the thieves was between South Halsted Street and South Eggleston Avenue, as far north as 88th Street and reaching down to 111th Street, according to a community alert from Chicago police. The thefts occurred in the early morning hours between June 2 and July 9.

In each incident, an unknown person double-parked their vehicle in front of the victim’s vehicle while a second person crawled under the vehicle and used a power saw to cut off the catalytic converter, which was later sold as scrap metal, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Area South detectives at 312-747-8273.
