Cat weighing 26lbs finds new home after more than 3,000 people apply to adopt him

An 26lb shelter cat who won over the internet has found a new home after more than 3,000 people applied to adopt him.

Big boi Mr B, a rescue cat originally named BeeJay, became a viral sensation when the Morris Animal Refuge in Philadelphia posted a plea for an adoptee to come forward to give him a new home.

The tweet was liked more than 50,000 times and shared by 14,500 people on Twitter.

The Morris Animal Refuge said on Wednesday that Mr B had found a foster home, which could become permanent.

The shelter wrote: "Sweet chunky Mr. B’s amazed by the huge outpawing of interest in him - over 3000 applications!

"He has a foster (maybe forever) home now - but so many other great adoptable cats need you."

The refuge's social media coordinator Dan Soloman told HuffPost last week that Mr B was given to the shelter by a family that were struggling to care for him.

Mr Solomon also said that, despite the cat's heath and behavioural issues, he "seems very quiet and laid back and sweet".

The shelter said on its website that it was working with the new foster family to help resolve Mr B's issues so that it could possibly stay there permanently.

"While the goal is to make this Mr. B's forever home, the family will be able to provide him with a safe and comfortable environment while we learn more about him and his needs," the Morris Animal Refuge website said.

Morris Animal Refuge also said that the viral post helped bring in more than $1,800 in donations and the shelter has sold more than 400 Mr B t-shirts.

"With all of this attention, we want to remind people that there are thousands of animals in shelters all across the country that need your help," Morris Animal Refuge said.

"Consider adopting one of these amazing animals. If you cannot adopt, foster. If you cannot foster, volunteer."
