Cat shot by air rifle in violent attack had to have eye removed

A cat has been forced to have his eye removed after being shot by an air rifle.

The feline is thought to be a stray and was found within the G33 postcode area of Glasgow, which covers the east of the city.

He has now been named George by the Scottish SPCA who believe that he is around 10-years-old.

George had initially been reported to the Glasgow branch of Cats Protection due to his eye injury.

However, vets soon discovered an air rifle pellet in his eye and subsequently had to remove his eye.

The Scottish SPCA are now appealing for further information on how George sustained the wound.

A spokesperson said: "He was initially reported to Cats Protection’s Glasgow branch due to an eye injury.

"Upon closer inspection, vets found an air rifle pellet and sadly, the eye had to be taken out.

"Owning an air rifle without a licence has been illegal since December 2016.

"We strongly support restrictions around air rifle ownership because of incidents like this.

"George is now in the care of Cats Protection receiving the care he needs.

"He is not currently available for rehoming.

"If you recognise this cat, or have any information on how he sustained this injury, please contact our confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999."
