Cat missing for seven months 'set up home' at Alexandria dump four miles from home

A wandering moggy who went missing for seven months has returned from his adventures after living in a rubbish dump four miles from home.

Tom’s owner was worried sick after he disappeared from his home in Bonhill in June last year.

Little did she know the mischievous cat had set up at Barr Environmental’s Auchencarroch landfill site in Jamestown, where he had won over the staff.

The workers made sure Tom was well looked after with treats and toys and took him to the vets, where his discovered microchip led him back to his relieved owner.

She told the Lennox Herald how grateful she was to staff who looked after him, saying: “He took himself a wander along the hill and set up home along at the local dump for the best part of the seven months.

“The guys working there befriended him and took him along to the vets and was scanned so my details were on his chip.

“All the guys took to him and got him treats and toys.

“He disappeared on June 1 and they first saw him about September time. They looked out for him.

“I want to say a big thanks to them.”

Tom is a well-known wanderer and and it wasn’t unusual for him to disappear for a couple of days but he has never been away for so long before.

He is now back enjoying his home comforts but his owner said it took him a short time to find his bearings.

She added: “He was in a bit of a strop the first day or so. I Interrupted his mouse hunting.

“He’s a bit of a wanderer so wasn’t unusual for him to disappear for a few nights.

“He’s starting to settle back into the house now.”

Cats Protection Glasgow Adoption Centre Lost and Found put out an appeal to the public when Tom went missing and told of their delight after he was found.

They posted last week: “Amazing news this evening! Tom, who’d been missing since June, 2021, was reunited with his relieved family today.

“He’d been staying in a recycling centre about four miles away from home since September.

“One of the staff members there managed to gradually gain Tom’s trust, to where he was finally able to get him into a carrier.

“He took him to the vet this afternoon and thanks to his microchip, was able to be returned home.

“Welcome home Tom!”
