She said to the ECHO : "How am I supposed to explain this to our 10 year old son. What am I suppose to say?"

Sian explained that her cat arrived home late on Tuesday night and when she took a closer look she discovered its tail had been cut off and her fur had been shaved.

She said: "We went to the vets but at one point I had to leave the room when they told me she had been attacked with hair clippers. I could not believe what I was hearing. "

Sian said that her cat, Beauty, has now undergone surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Yesterday (Thursday 14 October) it was reported that a cat had had its tail cut off and fur shaved in the Wood Lane area.

"The incident is believed to have happened on Tuesday (12 October) and anyone in the area with any information is asked to contact police."

Inspector Alyson Keenan said: “It is unacceptable for a cat to attacked in this way, it is distressing for the owner and extremely cruel to harm a defenceless animal.
