Cat dies in home blaze after firefighters use CPR and oxygen to try and save its life

A cat died in a house fire in Oldham yesterday — despite firefighters' efforts to save the beloved pet.

Crews from three stations were scrambled to the ‘substantial’ house fire in Diggle at 11:30am on Thursday, July 29, after a blaze ripped through a semi-detached home.

Fortunately, all the human occupants of the home escaped — but a cat lost its life, despite the best efforts of fire fighters.

“Today we attended a substantial House fire in Oldham,” firefighter Aaron Lee tweeted.

“Luckily all occupants managed to escape prior to our arrival.

“Sadly the pet cat was overcome with smoke and despite our best efforts giving the cat oxygen and CPR it couldn’t be revived.

“We try to save ALL life.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed that one woman was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

The spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News: “Just after 11.30am on Thursday 29 July, three fire engines from Oldham, Stalybridge, and Mossley fire stations were called to reports of a fire at a house on Moor Crescent, Diggle.

“The fire involved the kitchen, stairs, and landing of a semi-detached home.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus accessed the property and used two hose reels, one positive pressure ventilation unit and specialist tools to extinguish the fire and make the scene safe.

“One woman who had left the property prior to crews’ arrival was assessed by colleagues from North West Ambulance Service.

“Crews were in attendance for around two and a half hours.”
