Cat charity launches 'hands-free' rehoming so owners can adopt during lockdown

A pet charity has launched a new hands-free rehoming system for owners to adopt rescue cats and kittens during lockdown.

Cats Protection is trying out the contactless scheme after being unable to let people safely adopt felines during the coronavirus outbreak.

Glasgow's rescue shelter kickstarted the scheme with five cats ready to be rehomed, including Whoopie, Edgar, Bumbles, Oliver and Jinky.

Their new system will allow people to adopt cats while centres remain closed to the public.

If you’re keen to adopt a new feline, you can browse cats needing homes on the charity’s website by looking at photos, videos, and full descriptions.

If a match is made, Cats Protection will arrange a virtual meet-up to do all their necessary checks.

When you receive your new pet, you’ll pay an adoption fee and then your cat will be dropped off at your home in a Cats Protection van, with social distancing rules strictly observed.

Every cat will arrive neutered, microchipped, and healthy, so you don’t need to worry about taking it to the vet to have it checked out during lockdown.

You'll even have follow-up calls in the following weeks to make sure the cat is settling in well and to be offered extra support and advice if needed.

Mark Beazley, director of operations at Cats Protection, said: "This is a fantastic scheme, which will not only help us to find loving homes for the cats in our care, but can also help provide much-needed companionship for people at this difficult time.

"We know from our own research that nine out of 10 owners say their cat has a positive effect on their mental wellbeing.

"And two thirds also said that their cat helps them calm down when working from home, which it looks like many of us will be continuing to do for some time to come."
