Cat branded with Mexican drug gang tattoo on its skin is found in prison

A hairless cat who was given gang tattoos by its cruel convict owners has been adopted after being rescued from a Mexican prison.

The cat, an Egyptian hairless breed, had the words "Hecho en Mexico" tattooed on its skin - a logo most commonly seen decorating members of the Mexicles drug gang.

The feline was one of nine animals being kept in inmates' cells at the Cerso No. 3 state prison in Juarez, Mexico.

Its rescue came after a New Year's Day prison break saw seven inmates and 10 guards slaughtered.

Heavily-armed gunmen stormed the prison gates during visiting time, killing three guards before going to a cell block housing Ernesto "El Neto" Alfredo Piñon - the ruthless leader of the Mexicles gang, which is associated with the notorious Sinaloa Cartel.

They rounded up seven guards, and shot them point-blank in a brutal execution scene, before fleeing with "El Neto".

A few days later, the gang leader was gunned down in a shootout and police have recaptured most of the 30 escaped cons.

As well as the pets, officials found stacks of cash, drugs, plasma TVs, musical instruments and even a mechanical bull inside the prison cells.

After being recovered, the cat was put up for adoption, with hundreds of people all around the world offering to take kitty in.

Authorities in Juarez created a shortlist of applicants, seven of them from the US, two from Juarez and one from Oaxaca.

They voted for the cat to be sent to a new country and away from its former gangster owners.

The new owner's identity is not being revealed so they don't become a gang target.

In 2019, a puppy had to have her eye removed after being shot and tortured by a gang of thugs in California.

The adorable pooch, who was named Oakley, was repeatedly blasted with pellets in the sickening attack before being left for dead.

Oakley was rescued when a woman heard the gunshots outside her home, in Bakersfield, California, and ran out to find the injured animal.

The brown and white puppy was found crying in pain under the woman's car as four people fled the scene.

Oakley was rushed to the nearest rescue centre, where vets were able to save her life.

At the end of last year, a "very sad and depressed" cat was finally adopted after his listing went viral.

People across the internet fell in love with Fishtopher after pictures of the slightly cross-eyed cat were posted and widely shared on social media.

Many rejoiced at the news he found his forever home.

The Domestic Short Hair & Bengal Mix had been waiting for adoption at the Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center in New Jersey, US, when his adoption listing went viral.

Pleading for him to be taken, the listing read: "He is very sad and depressed and will only eat when he has company. Five year old Fishtopher was found as a stray, maybe he is missing his family."

It continued: "Fishtopher is a big cheeky boy, wouldn't you love rubbing up on those big cheeks? He loves cuddling up in arms, it seems to make him feel secure.

"We feel that Fishtopher would do best in a more quiet home. Please come rescue our big loveable boy!"
