Casualty 'trapped in car' after multi-vehicle crash causes traffic chaos on M5

A casualty has been cut free from a car after a caused heavy traffic on the M5 this afternoon (December 19).

Fire crews, police officers and an ambulance were all called to the scene of the smash, which took place at J22 near Bridgwater.

The collision caused six miles of traffic and delays of around 60 minutes, leaving many motorists at a complete standstill.

Avon Fire and Rescue said three vehicles were involved in the crash and added one person was left trapped in their car.

“Two fire engines from Bridgwater, one from Cheddar and a rescue tender from Taunton were all sent to a report of a multiple vehicle collision," a fire service spokesperson said.

“On arrival crews confirmed this was a collision involving three vehicles, with one person still trapped in one car.

“Crews used hydraulic cutting equipment and removed the roof of the vehicle to get the casualty out, who was then conveyed to hospital via ambulance."

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

They said: “Police were called to support the other emergency services at a collision on the M5 northbound between junctions 22 and 21 at about 11.21am Thursday (December 19).

"Lane closures were put in place to enable fire and ambulance crews to work at the scene and recovery of the vehicles.

"There were no injuries believed life-threatening or life-changing.”

A local radio station had tweeted that an air ambulance was believed to be trying to land at the scene.
