Casualties trapped in cars following serious crash on the A697 in Northumberland

The air ambulance has been called to a serious crash on the A697 in Northumberland.

Police received a call at 3.09pm to reports of a two-vehicle collision close to the New Moor House crossroads near Edlingham.

Officers closed the road in both directions as emergency services descended on the scene.

Three fire crews and a specialist rescue unit were sent to the scene as a result of a number of casualties becoming trapped in vehicles.

A Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We received a call at 3.09pm from police to attend a road traffic collision on the A697.

“We have three fire engines at the scene as well as a specialist rescue unit.

“Police are ambulance are also in attendance.”

The air ambulance has landed at the scene and has been joined by a number of teams from the North East Ambulance Service.

It is understood there are a "number of patients" but the extent of their injuries is unknown at this stage.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received a call at 3.08pm to a two-vehicle collision at the junction of the A697 and B6341 at Edlingham.

“There are a number of patients, some of which are trapped in vehicles.

“A number of resources have been dispatched to the scene including ambulances, Hazardous Area Response Teams and rapid response vehicles while we also requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

“We remain at the scene at this stage.”

Police are urging drivers to avoid the area with the road expecting to be closed for several hours.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 3.09pm today (Friday), police received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A697 near the New Moor House crossroads, Northumberland.

“Emergency services are at the scene. The road is currently closed and motorists are asked to avoid the area.”
