Two people have been killed after a light plane crashed off the coast.

Emergency services responded after 4pm on Saturday to reports of a crash off Nambucca Heads on the NSW mid-north coast.

A witness said he saw a light plane appear to go down out to sea, according to police, and wreckage was seen about 1.5km offshore soon after.

The pilot and passenger of the aircraft died at the scene and are yet to be formally identified, police said.

Police were investigating the incident and being assisted by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
