Castlewellan crash leaves four cars wrecked

A number of cars have been damaged in a road smash in South Down tonight.

Images from the scene that are circulating on social media show at least four vehicles have been badly damaged in the incident at Lakeside Villas on the Clarkhill Road in Castlewellan.

The police and Ambulance Service have not released any details yet.

However, SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath has said there will need to be a “full investigation by PSNI and Transport NI” into the incident.

He added: “The images from the aftermath of the incident near Castlewellan are truly horrific. It looks more like a bomb-site that a traffic accident.

“This is a serious incident and will need fully investigated by PSNI. I will be speaking with senior officers to ensure this is fully examined and a thorough explanation provided.”

Mr McGrath said residents in the area “have been complaining for years that speeding traffic in the area could cause death or damage”.

There is a significant clean-up operation ongoing this evening with recovery lorries removing the damaged vehicles from the scene.
