Castlemilk Primary supermarket protest movie lands pupils major award win

Young filmmakers at a primary school in Castlemilk have won a major award for a mini-documentary about what it's like to live in an area without a local supermarket.

The pupils at Castleton Primary took home the prestigious Audience Choice Award at the 2020 Into Film Awards, which honour the talent and hard work of young film makers and film enthusiasts from schools across the UK.

The short film, called 'It’s Just Not Fair!', was created by primary four kids at the Dougrie Road school, and is a rallying cry to the big supermarket chains - having been born from their frustration at having to walk nearly an hour on foot or pay £10 in taxi to get to the nearest one.

Into Film Scotland programme manager Kirsty Gallacher said; “This has been an unbelievably challenging year for us all, but the commitment and work of our Scottish leaders who continue to support their learners experiences with film never fails to amaze me.

"That is why we are incredibly proud and offer our warmest congratulations to all the winners of 2020  – now more than ever it is important to acknowledge and celebrate these fantastic achievements.”

The pupils were due to collect their award - voted for by online audiences and sponsored by Netflix - at a glittering live event at Odeon Leicester Square alongside stars of the film and TV industry.

But due to the coronavirus pandemic, they were instead presented with the award at a virtual ceremony by writer and TV personality David Walliams.

Well done guys! Looks like we might have some young Spielbergs on our hands!
