'Castle' with links to Robinson Crusoe for sale near Weston-super-Mare

A castle-like five-bedroom house with an interesting literary connection is up for sale in Lympsham, near Weston-super-Mare.

It’s on the market for just the second time in over 300 years - and you can get your hands on it for a cool £1.1 million.

The property was originally built back in 1715 as a Somerset longhouse but had an extension in 1866, which includes its own Victorian gothic-style tower.

And current owners have found the house was once home to the Rogers family in 1715, who had a fascinating link to the novel Robinson Crusoe.

Captain Woodes Rogers rescued Alexander Selkirk (the original castaway), which Daniel Defoe is reputed to have first heard about in a Bristol pub, inspiring his story.

Described by selling agents Yopa as an “incredible space”, the house offers huge flexibility for any potential buyer, with a lounge once used as a self-contained granny flat with its own entrance.

The property has four separate reception rooms and the huge farmhouse kitchen with a walk-in pantry.

There is also a good sized utility room and cloakroom, and the study is set up as a home office with a separate landline.

The first floor is no less impressive. All five of the bedrooms are large doubles, the master bedroom has an en-suite and walk-in wardrobe, bedroom two also has an en-suite.

There are a further three bedrooms and a family bathroom complete with stand-alone bath and separate shower cubicle.

There is also a gym (the former chapel) and a bell tower which enjoys wonderful views over the front garden.

Over the years the current owners have updated and modernised the house, keeping it in great condition throughout: gas central heating, a complete rewire in 2012, sash windows with working shutters restored to National Trust standards, modern bathrooms, en-suites and kitchen.

Despite its long history agents Yopa say the house “still has so much character”.

Lympsham is a small village six miles west of Axbridge and six miles south-east of Weston-super-Mare.

It has its own village school and pre-school, and has transport links to Bristol Airport and Bristol city centre.
