Castle with dramatic 360° views, café and unique shop less than an hour from Liverpool

Hidden away down country roads is a stunning castle that offers dramatic 360° views.

Beeston Castle is less than an hour away from Liverpool in Tarporley, Cheshire, but it can feel like you are stepping back in time as you get a glimpse of what it might have been like when the incredible structure was built hundreds of years ago. The impressive medieval castle is perched on a rocky sandstone crag 350 feet above the Cheshire plain and boasts a rich 4,000 year history, along with a 40-acre woodland park.

It is a steep climb up the hill through a wooded area to the ruins of the 13th century outer gatehouse. The main feature of the site is the inner gatehouse, which was likely the first part of the structure to be built in the 1220s.

In addition to taking in the extensive history of the castle, guests can also enjoy stunning views that can stretch as far as 30 miles on a clear day. English Heritage describes the view as "one of the most dramatic in Cheshire."

Visitors may be able to spot the Welsh Hills, Liverpool, Chester, Stanlow Oil Refinery and Jodrell Bank, with Peckforton Castle spotted nestled on the opposite hillside.

It costs £11 for adults to visit the site, which includes a donation, and £6.50 for children. Families for two adults and up to three children can get a ticket for £28.50 while families with one adult costs £17.50. These prices can vary a little at peak times.

In terms of parking at the castle, there is a car park with around 100 spaces, costing £3 for non-members to park. Members can park their car for free. The car park is located directly across from the ticket office building on Chapel Lane, just west of the A49.

Visitors will be able to find the gift shop inside the ticket office building. Those looking to refuel after a busy day of exploring can head to the Sandstone Café, which is located just down the road from the entrance to the castle grounds.

The café serves light bites such as pasties, sausage rolls, soup and a children's lunch box, along with a variety of cakes. Hot and cold drinks are available. Beeston Castle is open to visitors from 10am until 5pm every day. For more information visit the English Heritage website.
