Castle Douglas social distancing barriers defended by Dumfries and Galloway Council

Dumfries and Galloway Council has defended the installation of social distancing barriers in Castle Douglas.

Shopkeepers have hit out at the move, claiming the barricades were taking up valuable parking spaces and causing a hazard for pedestrians.

Some also say they have’t been consulted on the move – but that’s something the local authority denies.

A spokesman said: “The council’s town centre task team, in discussions with businesses and shoppers, have identified several locations across Dumfries and Galloway where temporary widening of footways would help with public safety.

“At some of the identified ‘pinch points’ the council have widened the footway by using temporary barriers which have helped pedestrians passing, shoppers queuing more safely and business to adhere to government guidelines.

“In some locations it has meant utilising an area of road to install a temporary widened footway. In some locations this has impacted on-street parking, but with many car parks close-by, pedestrian and road safety must be paramount.

“The council continues to monitor the arrangements – and the council continues to support local businesses across the region and encourages shoppers to shop local and shop safe.”
