Castle Douglas Primary pupil brings Scotland rugby team luck - quarter of a century after teacher does the same

A Castle Douglas Primary pupil brought the Scotland rugby team luck ... 25 years after his teacher did the same.

Finlay Callander was a mascot for Scotland’s Six Nations game with France at Murrayfield on Sunday, Gregor Townsend’s side running out 28-17 victors.

And Finlay’s trip to the capital brought back memories for his teacher Jamie Coulthard who was just as lucky when he was on mascot duties for Scotland’s game against Canada in 1995.

He said: “It was a competition in Young Scot magazine. It’s the only thing I’ve ever won in my life!

“It was a great experience, although the game wasn’t televised. My parents got a video of it. I think they still have it I got a kit and boots but I think I wore them out.

“Finlay was absolutely buzzing when he came in on Monday.”

Finlay, who is 10 and lives in Glenlochar and plays with Stewartry Sharks, got to sing the national anthem with the team before they beat France.

He returned home with a clutch of goodies including top, tracksuit and a ball signed by the team.
