Castle Douglas police issue warning over new phone scam

Police have issues a new warning about crooks trying to con people out of money over the phone.

The move follows reports last week from concerned members of the public.

Sergeant Colin Scott at Castle Douglas said: “A phone call is received from a person who claims to be a police officer from the Fraud Investigation Department.

“They go on to tell you they are working in a police station in the London area and they have arrested someone using your credit card.

“They advise you to phone a number they provide to obtain a crime reference number.

“When the victim phones this number another person answers and provides a reference number after pretending to check that the officer you have spoken to is genuine.

“They then ask for your banking details. The fraud is then complete as the fraudsters now have your bank details.

“The phone line will not have been cleared and you will be on the same call as the one made to you by the fraudster but someone will pretend to answer what you think is your new call.

“Fortunately no money being taken on these occasions.”

Sergeant Scott added: “Always wait 10 minutes before making a call to a number you trust and know to be real like your bank.

“Never give out your bank details over the phone.”
