A project aimed at recycling old IT equipment to be used by school kids has been handed a £10,000 cash boost.
Castle Douglas IT Centre has received the funding for its Re Use IT scheme from Stewartry area committee’s anti-poverty fund.
The scheme aims to refurbish donated kit to be given to school children for online learning and also those most in need.
Centre manager Jackie Williams said: “The IT Centre was delighted to receive an award from the Stewartry area committee to refurbish laptops, tablets and mobile phones to make them useable for school children for their home schooling and also those in need.
“This award will help fund part of this project. If successful with other funding bids we hope to roll this out across Dumfries and Galloway.
“We would be happy to receive any suitable devices from individuals and businesses.”
The Re Use IT project will ensure children aren’t left behind and also allow households access new skills and information, as well as tackle rural and social isolation.
The centre is appealing for equipment and would ideally like laptops less than five-years-old, although older equipment will be considered and all devices will be wiped.
All mobile devices will be accepted and details of the network they are locked to should be provided. Printers are not being accepted.
Anyone who would like to donate can contact Jackie by calling 01556 503167 or emailing jackie@theitcentre.org.uk.
Re Use IT was one of three programmes sharing in £19,620 given out by councillors who had received applications totalling £56,278.
The remaining £4,810 went to Solway Credit Union to ensure they could maintain and expand its digital services.
