Castle Douglas group aim to walk one million steps to raise funds for reforestation of Nepal

A group of charity walkers are hoping their fundraising efforts are nice and tr-easy.

Castle Douglas residents Keith Heron, Lyn Ferguson, Max Pohlendt and St Ninian’s Church rector Rev Christopher Ketley plan to collectively walk one million steps by November 20.

In the process, they are hoping to raise £2,500 for the Eden Reforestation Projects and, in particular, their plans to plant 1,500 trees in Nepal.

Reforestation is seen as an important way to tackle the climate crisis and Eden has already planted nearly 700 million trees in nine developing countries.

In addition, Eden employs people from disadvantaged backgrounds in Nepal to plant and care for the trees, providing them with income to support their families and move out of extreme poverty.

Max said: “Deforestation is a major global problem which is a significant contributor to the climate crisis and planting trees is one way of helping to restore the environmental balance.

“Words alone are not enough at this point in human history. We need to act now to protect the planet. That is why we are doing this fundraising walk and hoping to raise enough money to fund the planting of 15,000 trees.”

The group, which can be sponsored by visiting www.justgiving.com/trees4nepal, has received the backing of Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson.

He said: “This promises to be quite a tall order and I can only praise the quartet for attempting such a remarkable feat.

“Walking one million steps collectively is going to require a lot of stamina and courage and I sincerely hope that they manage to achieve their goal.
