Castle Douglas family raise more than £2,000 for motor neurone disease charity

A Castle Douglas family went the extra mile on Father’s Day to raise funds for MND Scotland.

And the McGaw kids have pulled in more than £2000 for the motor neuron disease charity.

Their dad John, who is self-isolating, was diagnosed with the life-limiting condition in 2015.

The family joined hundreds of others for MND Scotland’s Fun Run Relay event on Sunday.

John, whose MND has affected his ability to walk, encouraged Liam, 15, Aillie, 12, and nine-year-old Blaine, towards their 10k target.

He said: “I am so proud of my kids, not only doing this but how they cope day to day with my MND.

“Doing it raises awareness that they are affected by MND too, not just me.”

Liam said: “This is the first time we’ve felt able to try raise money for MND.

“It’s something we wanted to do that was fun and that we can all do together.

“I’m really proud to be raising money for a cause that we live with every single day.”

Aillie said: “We set our target at £50 and thought if we got that it would be really good.

“We couldn’t believe when mum was telling us how much people had donated.”

Blaine added: “MND makes speech and walking very difficult for my dad.

“I wanted to raise money for a disease that he has and we want this to help find a cure.”

Covid-19 meant the charity could not hold its annual fun run near Glasgow,

Instead a national relay race across Scotland was organised.

Fundraisers took on as many of the 581km (361 miles) from John O’Groats to Gretna as possible.

Iain McWhirter of MND Scotland said: “Sunday was an extra-special Father’s Day for many.

“Hundreds of supporters across the country took part in our Fun Run Relay with their dads or in memory of those we have lost.

“We’ve been blown away by the response and I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part.

“Every distance covered and every penny raised is helping take us a step closer to a cure for MND.”
