Castle Douglas diplomat handed important role in Pakistan

A diplomat from Castle Douglas has been handed a top role in Pakistan.

Mike Nithavrianakis, who has worked for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for more than 30 years, will this month move to Karachi to become deputy high commissioner and trade director.

He has previously had postings in Malaysia, Russia, Ghana and Saudi Arabia .

And his more recent roles include being deputy head of mission in Athens, deputy high commissioner in Chennai and deputy ambassador in Kabul.

Several of his posts have focussed on international security, regional politics and supporting the UK’s trade and investment priorities.

Mr Nithavrianakis, who is married and has two grown up children, was born to a Scottish mother and Greek father.

He grew up in Castle Douglas where his parents owned the Acropolis café on King Street from 1968 to 1986.

His brother, John, who was a fishing boat skipper, died last year.

In May, Mr Nithavrianakis ran the Edinburgh Marathon and his memory and raised more than £7,000 for the Fisherman’s Mission.
