Castle Douglas couple used lockdown to get fit and raise money for the British Heart Foundation

A Castle Douglas couple have raised hundreds of pounds for charity after taking up running during lockdown.

Grant Smith and Georgie Wandby decided to get in shape for their wedding on June 5 after becoming engaged during the first lockdown.

And they decided to turn their new hobby into a fundraiser for the British Heart Foundation and mental health charity Mind UK.

Grant, who works at Grierson Bros Butchers, said: “Georgie started doing Couch to 5k but wanted some company while she was running so I went along a few times.

“I say on Facebook the British Heart Foundation were doing a fundraiser to run 100km in April so I signed up.

“Georgie had a look for similar challenges and found one for Mind UK so she signed up for that one.

“We were sent T-shirts from our charities and off we went.

“We’ve had two days off throughout the whole month, ran 140km and raised a combined total of £350.

“Neither of us had done any running before we started and now we love it and plan on keeping it up as a new hobby.”
