Castle Douglas councillor slams litter louts for park mess

A councillor has slammed litter louts for the mess they made in a public park.

Iain Howie was disgusted at the amount of rubbish he discovered in Lochside Park in Castle Douglas on Thursday morning.

The Castle Douglas and Crocketford member said: “There were fast food cartons, ketchup sachets that had been scattered about deliberately, cans of cola and pizza boxes.

“It was almost an affront. It was a deliberate act of littering. It is a challenge keeping the park tidy but there is a bin 20 metres away. If the bin is full then it is accepted that you stack your rubbish up beside it.

“Doing this is not acceptable – it is effectively sticking two fingers up to the people who use the park legitimately.”

Steps taken to improve the park recently have included the creation of a garden of memories as well as turning an area into a meadow in a bid to boost wildlife numbers.

Mr Howie added: “This was near the area which is being used to encourage insects.”
