Castle Douglas care home resident celebrates 100th birthday

A resident at a Castle Douglas care home celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday.

Letty Lancaster was joined by family at Carlingwark House to mark the occasion. She received a telegram from Scottish Secretary Alister Jack, with the message from the Queen arriving on Tuesday.

Letty was born in South Shields on January 27, 1920, and worked in munitions during the war.

After the war, she did a lot of singing and musical performing in and around Blackpool. Her mother was one of the original Tiller Girls and her husband Elsworth Lancaster appeared on the Des O’Connor Show three times, Letty joining him on his last appearance.

The couple moved to the Stewartry in 1989 and are well known locally.

George died in 2010 and is buried in St Cuthbert’s Graveyard in Kirkcudbright.

Son Paul and his wife Sylvia were at Carlingwark on Monday to join in the celebrations.

Letty also has seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great, great-grandchildren.
