A business owner was furious after one of his drivers was given “abuse” while trying to make deliveries in Castle Douglas on Thursday morning.
The worker for Mitchells, of Castle Douglas, was attempting to deliver fruit and veg in King Street but the route had been shut off ahead of The Tour Series cycle race later in the day.
Despite firms having been told they would still be allowed access, a worker manning the barrier refused to let the driver through and spoke to her “in not the nicest way”.
Company boss Jim McGhee said: “My staff have worked hard all through this pandemic. There is no need for abuse like that.
“We deliver to hotels, shops and restaurants up and down King Street.
“One of my drivers came back in tears. The worker at the barrier had been abusive to her, said she couldn’t get through and really upset her.
“I managed to get hold of organisers who said that shouldn’t happen, we should be allowed to get through for deliveries.
“I ended up taking the van myself and got through.
The Tour Series was part of the four day CD Bike and Food Festival and co-ordinator John Whittaker said: “The driver moved the barrier so she could drive through and the traffic management guy said she couldn’t do that, perhaps not in the nicest way.
"I believe it was resolved – Ian Barr from the council went to apologise and someone from the traffic management company also went in to apologise.”
