Castle Douglas Bike and Food Festival proves to be a success

Castle Douglas was home to a four-day extravaganza of food and cycling last week.

The region’s food town played host to the CD Bike and Food Festival, bringing thousands of people to the area.

It kicked off on Thursday night when professional cyclists descended for the final round of The Tour Series.

Earlier in the day, members of the council’s active schools teams organised some cycling events and there was also a special relay combining family teams and the pros.

On Saturday, there was a time trial up King Street before a ride through the Galloway Forest on Sunday.

On the food side of things, there were stalls all along King Street as well as demonstrations and workshops with professional chefs.

Co-ordinator John Whittaker said: “I’m tremendously proud of what we achieved.

“We worked with a great group of people and all our volunteers were fabulous.

“On Saturday the town centre was just absolutely buzzing.

“In the time trial we had everything from three-year-old kids to very serious adults doing it.

“It was absolutely brilliant and the ride out on Sunday was good too.

“It’s tough to say how the businesses did as when you start talking about
road closures, people start asking things about how they’re going to get their car out. However, I think most people tolerated it.

“Normally the food festival is on Market Hill but we brought it to the town and I think the businesses did well out of it. One or two were even saying we should do it every Saturday!”

There are tentative hopes to hold a similar festival next year although that – particularly the return of The Tour Series – will depend on what funding is available.
