Castle Douglas Bike and Food Festival on the hunt for volunteers

Volunteers are being urged to sign up to help run the inaugural Castle Douglas Bike and Food Festival next month.

Centrepiece of the August 12 to 15 spectacular will be The Tour Series, Britain’s leading televised cycle race.

Festival managers Castle Douglas Development Forum said anyone can apply with time commitments entirely of their choosing.

Social media intern Calypso Coulton said: “We need people of all ages and abilities to help us deliver what we think will be a fantastic weekend of action and indulgence.

“No particular skills are needed as we will guide and train you if needed.

“Food and thank you gifts will be provided to all volunteers as well as the opportunity to be involved in a Castle Douglas showcase.

“Anyone wishing to get involved even for a short time can get in touch with our team at info@castledouglas.info.”

Racing starts on the Thursday with professional teams lining up on King Street for multi-lap high speed races featuring the best British domestic male and female teams.

Club and casual riders will then take the stage on the closed-road circuit on Friday 13 when the town centre will become a festival village featuring food and drink trade stalls, with local shops and cafes adding to the buzz on King Street.

The food festival continues on the following day when the street will feature a time trial from the town clock to the Market Hill in the late afternoon.

The cycling action will head out of town to the Galloway Forest on Sunday for a 74km cycle sportive including 45km on gravel roads around the former Stranraer–Dumfries railway line and the Raiders Road.

Calypso added: “Castle Douglas Development Forum is excited to be able to make this event happen.

“We all are looking forward to welcoming people to the food and bike festival.”

Dumfries and Galloway Council and the Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership are funding the event.
