CASSIUS BACK: Michigan State’s star point guard will return next year

Despite weeks of speculation where even Tom Izzo said he would advise Cassius Winston to test the NBA draft waters, Cassius Winston shocked Spartan Nation today with his announcement today that he would return for his Senior season.

The Spartans star point guard, reigning Big Ten Player of the Year, and First-Team All-American indeed announced he will be returning to the school for his senior season. In regards to his return, Winston had this to say:

“This was an incredible season with an amazing group of teammates, but I believe there is still more to accomplish.”

While we weren’t sure he’d return this season or not, I think this is a smart decision for Winston. He was still slated to be drafted at the end of the second round, so one more campaign, after working on some of his (few) weaknesses could be all he needs to elevate his draft status, similar to how Denzel Valentine went from being projected to be undrafted to being selected #14 in the Draft.

Winston will return to a loaded roster, with four of the starters likely being:

  • Cassius Winston
  • Joshua Langford
  • Aaron Henry
  • Xavier Tillman

The question will be who will occupy the final starting spot now that Nick Ward will officially be leaving. It could very well be new recruit Rocket Watts if Izzo feels comfortable fielding a three-guard starting unit. Or, we could see Marcus Bingham or Gabe Brown playing power forward for this team if either takes a leap in their development over the summer.
