Cassandra Sainsbury facing 6 years in jail for Colombian cocaine plot

Lawyers for accused Adelaide drug smuggler Cassandra Sainsbury have reportedly accepted a six-year prison term after she admitted responsibility for the crime of drug trafficking in a Colombian court.

The 22-year-old reportedly struck a plea deal with prosecutors, after being arrested at Bogota's El Dorada International Airport during April.

She was found in possession of 5.8 kilograms of cocaine, which was wrapped inside 18 packages containing headphones.

Sainsbury had been preparing to board a flight to London before returning to Australia and has been detained in El Buen Pastor women's prison since her arrest.

Media in Colombia have reported she has accepted responsibility and, after prosecutors recommended a six-year prison term, her lawyers agreed.

The judge, however, is yet to accept the six-year deal, and reportedly called into question its validity.

Sainsbury told the court that she only took the package because her family and partner had been threatened, but the prosecution questioned why she did not say that when she was arrested.

Her Colombia-based lawyer Orlando Herran previously said if she was found guilty of drug trafficking, she could face a prison term of between eight and 20 years, depending on her level of guilt and responsibility.
