Cashpoint taken during middle of the night ramraid at Treharris supermarket

Six people have been arrested after thousands of pounds was stolen from a cashpoint machine taken during an alleged ramraid in the middle of the night.

Five men and one woman, who are all from the Gwent area, are currently being questioned in police custody after the incident at the Co-op in Fox Street, Treharris , around 12.40am on Tuesday.

South Wales Police said it was working with neighbouring force Gwent Police as part of the investigation.

A spokesman for Co-op, said: "An incident occurred at our Treharris store at around 12:40am in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, 14 May) where there was an attack on the community’s ATM.

"Police are investigating, and we appeal for anyone who may have seen or heard anything to come forward. While we await repairs and, the outcome of assessments into the damage caused, it is too early to confirm when the store will re-open to serve the community."

The Treharris store is closed while supermarket bosses assess the damage caused.

Earlier this week, the supermarket chain said it was starting to use fog cannons after a series of break-ins at some stores in Wales.

Criminals will be covered by a forensic spray squirted from a cannon that stays on people for a number of years.

It comes after similar break ins at Prestatyn, Wrexham and Pontypool.
