Motorists across Stirling will be able to pay for parking by mobile phone from Monday, September 6.
Stirling Council is partnering with UK cashless parking provider RingGo to offer pay and display users a easy and quick method of payment rather than having to pay by cash.
RingGo offers motorists a choice of ways to pay: the most popular is via the RingGo app, which can be downloaded free of charge from the App Store or Google Play Store.
Users that don’t have a smartphone can book their parking by calling, sending a text message, or paying online. By paying for parking via RingGo there is no need to display a ticket as enforcement officers check the vehicle registration details against the RingGo database.
The council’s environment and housing convener Councillor Jim Thomson said: “This will be welcome news for a lot of people who have been looking for a cashless parking option in Stirling.
“RingGo is a quick and safe way to pay for parking and I would encourage everyone to download the app ahead of the service going live in the coming weeks.”
Tory group leader Neil Benny last year described the continuing lack of cashless parking options at council car parks as “embarrassing”.
He said this week: “We are pleased cashless parking payments are finally coming to Stirling but it is long overdue.
“Scottish Conservatives have been pressing for this for the last three years but the SNP/Labour administration did nothing to push it through and seemed content with Stirling being one of the last places to introduce it.
“However they were only too keen to cut bin collections. That tells you everything you need to know about their priorities.“
Anyone that has not previously used RingGo should download the free RingGo app and register their details, or go to RingGo.co.uk and complete the registration online. This will ensure they can park quickly and easily whenever they need to once the service goes live on September 6.
Paying by cash will still be available at council car parks, including in more remote areas where network coverage may not be as strong.
RingGo is already widely available across Scotland, including at neighbouring local authorities Perth and Kinross and Falkirk, as well as Glasgow and Edinburgh.
