Cash stolen from social club after masked burglars break in with a sledgehammer

Cash was stolen when masked raiders broken into an Ilkeston social club with a sledgehammer.

The Enterprise Sports and Social Club, in Station Road, Ilkeston, was targeted on Monday (April 8) at 4.19am.

CCTV caught the two burglars on camera but they had their faces covered, reports Derbyshire Live.

The raiders gained entry to the building by breaking through a glass panel at the back of the club leaving a trail of destruction inside.

According to the owner, they smashed a fruit machine to pieces and took £500. They also ransacked an office then ditched the sledgehammer outside.

John Harvey, who has been the club's steward for around seven years, said that he thinks in excess of £2,000 had been taken.

He said: "The alarm system went off at 4.19am and at 4.29am I was called. But, by the time I arrived (at the club) they were gone.

"It's happened several times over the years. Last time it happened they stole charity money. It's a lock up building so no one's here at night.

"We've done our best fitting alarms and CCTV cameras but there's not much more we can do."

Forensic officers were due to visit the club on Monday.

Mr Harvey, who watched the CCTV footage of the break in, also said their sheds and cabin has been broken into in the past.

Mr Harvey, who is part of a pub watch group, added that another pub in the area had also been burgled. However, it is unknown whether these two incidents are related.

The Observatory pub which is part of the JD Wetherspoon chain was broken into on the same night.

Trespassers gained entry through the roof of the building which is in the Market Place.

The chain confirmed that nothing had been stolen.

A spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon said: "We can confirm that The Observatory, at Ilkeston, was broken into last night, via the roof, but nothing was taken.

"The alarm was raised and the police attended the scene."
