Cash machine at petrol station where man was killed will have safety barriers installed after all

Additional safety measures are now being installed near a cash machine at a petrol station where a grandfather was killed.

Brian Griffiths, from Oxwich on Gower, was killed last year at a cashpoint when a 91-year-old driver put his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake at the Tesco petrol station in Gowerton,  Swansea.

In July this year, residents in the area raised their concerns after the cash machine was replaced in the original location without any physical safety barriers.

Speaking in July, one resident in the area, who asked not to be named, said: "The petrol station is in a very busy and prime location - a lot of people are in a confined space and it raises the risk of something going wrong again."

At the time, Tesco said it had examined the site and found it met all of its design and safety standards.

However, 13 months after the incident, Tesco has now decided to install additional safety measures at the cash machine.

Grandfather Mr Griffiths was pinned against the machine at the store as shocked customers rushed to help, a recent inquest at  Swansea coroners court  heard. His cause of death was recorded as crushing.

A Tesco spokesman said: We were deeply saddened by this incident and immediately completed a full safety review, which found that the cashpoint at our Gowerton petrol station met all safety standards.

"In response to a request from Mr Griffiths’ family and the local community we will now install additional safety measures at this cashpoint. Our thoughts remain with Mr Griffiths’ family.”
