Cash, knives and tick lists seized as police hit dealers working 70 miles from home

Homes were raided and suspects pulled from jail as part of a police operation targeting the influence of Liverpool drugs gangs in Shropshire.

Knives, cash and illicit substances were seized as part of an investigation into the spread of criminality across the county.

The probe was carried out in a joint initiative by Merseyside Police and West Mercia Police.

Ten suspects were questioned on suspicion of drug offences, a suspect who had been on the run was caught and another person was arrested on suspicion of drug driving.

A total of £9,000 was seized by officers as well as drugs and three knives.

The operation was Merseyside Police's latest against criminals from the region whose influence stretches far beyond Liverpool.

It targeted County Lines gangs - a term given for big city networks who send drugs to be sold in smaller cities and towns. Those in charge control a network of dealers and couriers and often build their enterprises on fear, violence and the exploitation of vulnerable people.

Cumbria, North Wales and parts of Cheshire and Lancashire are among the areas targeted most prolifically from Merseyside, but Shropshire is also seen as a viable market.

Last week's operation focused on the towns of Whitchurch, Shropshire, Oswestry and Market Drayton.

Detective Constable Ben Docherty, of West Mercia Police, said: “We know individuals involved in county lines drug dealing are travelling from Merseyside into Shropshire. Those involved in this criminality are either looking to exploit vulnerable people in our communities or are being exploited themselves.

“We are working in partnership with Merseyside Police to strengthen our response to disrupt their drugs supply and protect those at risk of exploitation.”
