Cash and cigarettes stolen in overnight Co-op raid

Thieves made off with cash and cigarettes after breaking into a Southport supermarket.

Two men broke into the Co-op store on Station Road, Ainsdale in the early hours of Friday. The pair are believed to have forced their way inside the building at around 12.50am before making off with the stolen goods.

The store remained closed throughout the following morning, with police attending to investigate the break-in.

A post on the Facebook page for the Peacocks store based within the supermarket said: “Due to unforseen circumstances we will be closed today. We will be back open as usual tomorrow. Sorry for any inconvenience.”

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “We were contacted at 1.50am today, Friday 21st May, following reports of a break-in at the Co-op store on Station Road, Ainsdale.

“It is believed at around 12.50am two males entered the premises and stole a quantity of cash and cigarettes.

“An investigation is underway and CCTV and forensic enquiries have been carried out.”
