Casemiro compared to Roy Keane as Man United fans laud signing of decorated midfielder

Manchester United's new signing Casemiro has already been compared to club legend Roy Keane ahead of his hotly-anticipated debut.

The five-time Champions League winner signed for the Red Devils in a deal worth £60m and is expected to slot into a United midfield which has at times been treading water and in need of fresh blood.

And in Casemiro, United fans feel they have found a potent solution to a glaring problem.

The Brazilian was unveiled at Old Trafford prior to Monday night's 2-1 win over arch-rivals Liverpool, and he was even greeted by Republic of Ireland legend and Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane on the night.

And some fans believe the presence of a player like Casemiro is something United have missed ever since Keane left the club back in 2005.

Manchester United fan page United In Focus argued that the club have not had a player like Keane since his departure - and that Casemiro could well be a very belated like-for-like repkacement.

They wrote: "It can be argued that ever since Roy Keane made his ignominious exit from Old Trafford in 2005, Manchester United simply haven’t replaced him. Until now.

"Casemiro is the nearest player in terms of character and ability to Keane, even if their styles of play are a little different, with the Brazilian far more defensive minded than the Irishman in his mid-90s pomp."

After Casemiro was unveiled to the United faithful, he walked down the touchline as far as Keane and the Corkman shook his hand and extended a warm welcome to the new boy.

However, when asked for his thoughts on the signing by Sky Sports presenter Dave Jones, Keane did err on the side of caution as he expressed mild concern over the structure of the deal.

He said: “He’s a good signing, they paid a lot of money for him.

“It’s a start but they need more, the problem is any player coming to Man United now, as good as they are, they’re coming into a bad dressing room and a bad group of players.

“The last year or two, they don’t want to run, they don’t seem a good group and that’s a problem for any player, however good they are.”

He concluded: “You can look at the bigger picture and think it’s a lot of money, long contract, a bit like [Christian] Eriksen getting a three-year deal.

"They’re [United] desperate and you’ve got to pay over the odds, I suppose.”

His former United teammate Gary Neville echoed that sentiment, outlining a certain degree of concern over the amounts of money United are pumping into new signings.

He said: "Sometimes now I don't get excited as I should do as a United fan about the signings that come in because I know that they're not part of the strategy at the start of the summer.

"Every other club is really precise, you don't see them bouncing around like a pinball in the transfer market from one player to another.

"It's De Jong, Rabiot and it ends up being Casemiro on a phenomenal contract that's going to cost the club £160m pounds."

And Neville warned that there could be trouble ahead down the line if the Brazilian is not performing while remaining on a hefty contract.

"I think he'll do well for the club forn a couple of years, but someone in two years time is going to pick up a player that's going to be beyond his best years on £20m a year that they can't shift.

"That might be Erik ten Hag, it might be a new manager or new owners so there is a large element of desperation with the signing because a five year contract for a 30 year old should not happen."
